Beware of Falling Coconuts

While on my second trip to Tahiti this year, we went to this little island off of Morea. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen! Winding palm trees literally covered the island. The tricky part was, when you wanted to take cover from the blistering sun, there would only be skinny areas of shade from the palm trees. You’d have to angle yourself strategically so the parts of your body most sensitive to the sun were in the shade, while sacrificing other areas of your body.

You could also consider this island a coconut cemetery. In nearly each coconut “grave” would be these giant crabs taking shelter. These monstrous creatures also lived in holes, which were scattered ALL over the island. I wandered the island for nearly an hour harassing crabs and little hermet crabs who were probably enjoying a peaceful day until I came around.

The fun stopped after a nearby shot was fired at me. While annoying these crabs, something giant crashed next to me! It was a colossal coconut, which fell from nearly 30 feet up. I can assume this was a sign that I should go back to the beach where my family was and stop ruining these crabs’ day. I wouldn’t go through that island again, for fear of being killed by a coconut.

Did you know there are more deaths a year from coconuts falling on peoples’ heads than shark attacks? It’s true . . .
